Methodology
Brief Explanation
The methods used in the project are interdisciplinary in nature and combine scientific analyses, practical applications, and digital and experimental techniques. The goal is to gain comprehensive insights into the restoration and energy optimization of half-timbered buildings that are both theoretically sound and practical.
Recording
Structured Building Survey and Digital Modeling

- Digital data capture techniques such as 3D laser scanning and “structure from motion” technology are used to create highly accurate three-dimensional models of half-timbered buildings. The virtual buildings created in this way are used to document detailed information about the geometry, damage, and condition of the buildings’ materials.
- Digital models serve as the basis for simulations and the development of restoration plans. They allow for a precise analysis of the existing building structure without invasive interventions.
Monitoring of New Thermal Insulation Systems (at Hessenpark)
- Various thermal insulation systems, each with different cavity fillings, were installed in 28 test areas on the east gables of the Lauterbach-Maar, Momberg I, and Momberg II test houses at the Hessenpark Open-Air Museum.
- To study these systems, various sensors were installed in the wood, within the cavities, and on the thermal insulation, and data was continuously recorded.
- In addition, data from indoor climate measurements and from an on-site weather station was used.
Monitoring of New Thermal Insulation Systems (Cottbus, Münster)
- In Cottbus, test panels with thermal insulation were also installed on a test building at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg for validation purposes.
- In addition, comparable systems were installed in Münster, Westphalia (HBZ Münster, Haus Kump) to simulate different climatic conditions.
Simulation
Building Physics Simulations

- The DELPHIN simulation program is used for the numerical analysis of the hygrothermal behavior of timber-frame walls. The software enables detailed modeling and prediction of moisture and heat transfer processes, as well as the assessment of resulting damage risks under varying climatic conditions.
- As part of scenario analyses, different renovation strategies can be systematically examined and evaluated in terms of their effectiveness from a building physics perspective. This enables well-informed decision-making prior to the implementation of practical measures.
Damage Analysis
Durability Study

- Half-timbered buildings that were renovated in the 1980s and 1990s are systematically inspected for damage. The goal is to evaluate the long-term effects of the renovation measures taken at that time and to draw conclusions for current and future renovation methods.
- Types of damage, such as fungal infestation, insect damage, cracks, or moisture damage, are documented and analyzed in terms of their causes and prevention strategies.
